Purpose:    This course will cover functions and their properties, and the foundations

            of trigonometry and analytic geometry.

Grades:   All tests and homework will done on a computer, using the program JExam.

             You can download  JExam from the departmental website (go to  “Practice Tests”

             on the web site).  You should begin working on the “practice tests” as soon as possible.

            (Warning:  JExam does not work under Microsoft Vista.)

                 Grades will be determined using the following formula set by Departmental policy,

             and posted on the website:  

                                    Tests 1-6                                60% total

                                    Final exam                             25%

                                    Online homework                     5%

                                    In-class Quizzes                      10%

              I will drop your lowest two quiz grades.  The final exam score can be used to replace

              the lowest test score. 

                   By Departmental policy, the following grading scale will apply:  92-100 A,  89-91 A-, 

             87-89 B+,  82-86 B, 79-81 B-,  77-78 C+,  72-76 C, 69-71 C-, 60-68 D,  below 60 F

                 

                   This class is in “Group 1”;   test dates are: 

                           Test 1:   Tuesday 9/4,     Test 2:  Tuesday 9/18,      Test 3:  Thursday 10/4,

                          Test 4:   Friday  10/19,    Test 3:  Thursday, 11/8,    Test 4:   Thursday 11/29.

             All tests are 75 minutes long, and will be administered in Grad Studies 324 and 308.                         

             You will sign up online for a time to take the tests, about two days in advance of each test.

                   The final exam is three hours long, and will be given in Grad Studies 324 or 308 during

              Finals Week, December 10-14, at a time you sign up for in advance.   

 

                   There will be 12 online homeworks, two per test.  Homework due dates will

             be posted on the Group 1 calendar on the 1113 website. 

                                                         

Academic Honesty:    This course will operate in accordance with UGA’s academic honesty policy

 (http://www.uga.edu/ovpi)

 

Attendance:    Regular class attendance is essential to success in Math 1113, and is expected.  

          Students with more than  5  unexcused absences may be withdrawn from class. 

          Attendance will be taken starting Wednesday, August 22, via a roll circulated at the

          beginning of class.

                         Math 1113 requires a lot of time outside class.  It is the student’s responsibility

          to keep up with all homework, practice tests, and current announcements as found on the

          Math 1113 home page.  It is essential that students spend a lot of time with the practice tests.

 

Calculators:   The JExam system has a built-in calculator.  You can also use a TI-30 calculator

           during tests (any version of a TI-30 is OK, but no other models or brands are allowed).

           Especially, graphing calculators are not allowed.

          Tutoring: 

              Free tutoring is available at the “Tutor House”;  call 706-542-7575 for an appointment.  

              Free tutorials are also offered through the Math Department, in the Grad Studies building, 

                 Monday-Thursday afternoon. 

              A list of paid tutors is available in the Mathematics Department office, Grad Studies 452.

 

          Makeup tests:   Make-up tests will only be given in the case of unavoidable absences. 

               It is your responsibility to contact me as soon as possible, before the next class meeting,

               to make arrangements for making up any missed test.  In order to make up the final,

               documentation must be provided.

 

          Makeup homework:   Online homework due dates are hard and fast.

               By course policy, no extensions on homework will be given for any reason. 

 

          Makeup Quizzes:  All quizzes will be announced.  No make-up quizzes will be given. 

              The lowest two quiz grades will be dropped.

 

          Deviations:  This course syllabus provides a general plan for the course; 

              deviations may be necessary.
