VIGRE II:
Vertical Integration of Research and Education
Department of Mathematics  --  University of Georgia

The Postdoctoral Program

Our VIGRE grant gives postdoctoral fellows time to develop their research and teaching with guidance from our faculty. VIGRE postdocs are appointed for two or three years, with teaching duties of two courses each academic year. They are important contributors to VIGRE research groups and seminars. They are encouraged to participate in the wider mathematical community by attending conferences and applying for research grants.

The 2001-02 and 2002-03 VIGRE postdocs were Aaron Abrams, Jim Solazzo, Bill Rulla, and Nancy Wrinkle. The 2003-04 VIGRE postdocs were Aaron Abrams, Jim Solazzo, Bill Rulla, and Jo Hoffacker. Our VIGRE postdocs for 2004-05 and 2005-06 were Kenneth Baker, Jason Parsley, Clay Petsche, and Tatyana Sorokina. Our VIGRE postdocs for 2008-09 were David Swinarski and Jeremy Wong. The VIGRE postdocs for 2009-10 are Christopher Drupieski, Niles Johnson and Eunju Sohn.

We've made our VIGRE initiatives a permanent part of our postdoctoral program. These initiatives include the assignment of research and teaching mentors to every postdoc, annual grant and job workshops, and postdoc participation in VIGRE research groups.

Fall 2009 Developmental Workshops

  • The Introduction to Proposal Writing workshop was led by Valery Alexeev on Thursday, August 20th at 3:30pm in the Colloquium room. This session focused on the nuts and bolts of applying for funding, and was aimed primarily at postdocs and junior faculty.
  • Zongzhu Lin, a program director for Algebra, Number Theory and Combinatorics at the NSF, discussed how NSF funding is decided on Thursday, Sept. 3rd at 3:30pm in room 304.
  • The Job Application Workshop was conducted by Jon Hanke and Pete Clark on Thursday, October 15th from 3:30-4:30pm in Boyd room 304.
  • The Navigating the Grant Administration Processes at UGA Workshop took place on Tuesday, October 20th at 3:30pm in Boyd room 304. Representatives from OVPR discussed how to track grant account balances, complete no-cost extensions, and review important budget survival topics. This workshop is aimed at current and future grant holders
  • Melissa Mottley and Lakeiya Keese from OVPR will hold a workshop on on Tuesday, Nov. 10th at 3:30pm in room 304 on navigating research administration processes at UGA. They will speak about aspects of using both external and internal funding for things like foreign travel, computers and cell phones. They will also address technicalities like Pre-awards vs. Pending awards.
  • Inside the Mathematician's Studio, a series of interviews with seasoned researchers, will first feature Prof. Dan Nakano in November. Stay tuned for further details.
