VIGRE Research Groups
Our Vertical Research Groups (VRGs) provide practical training in contemporary mathematical research through the process of experiential learning. The VRGs run much like laboratories in the physical and biological sciences. They bring undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs and faculty together to work on a common research project. The work is divided into pieces, so that students can make substantial contributions. Knowledge is brought into the group from many sources, not simply from textbooks. And many of the VRGs involve a significant computational component, which allows the participants to develop a familiarity with new computational advances that can be employed in their work. Several of our VRGs have published their results in research journals. VIGRE research groups and the VIGRE seminar have become a permanent part of our graduate program, required of all graduate students in their first two years.
