Summer School Week One

May 21-25, 2012

Arrival date: Sunday, May 20th

Departure date: Friday, May 25th (program ends by 1pm)

Topics:
  1. Curves and their moduli (lectures by Joe Harris and Ian Morrison)
  2. Abelian varieties and their moduli (lectures by Gregory Sankaran)
  3. Applications to the minimal model program (lectures by James McKernan)
Schedule:
  • 9:10-9:30 Morning refreshments
  • 9:30-10:45 First lecture
  • 10:45-11:15 Coffee break
  • 11:15-12:30 Second lecture*
  • 12:30-2:30 Break for lunch 2:30-4:00
  • Afternoon working groups*

*On Friday the program will conclude after the second lecture, and the afternoon working group will not be held.

The Georgia Algebraic Geometry Symposium will take place between weeks one and two of the VIGRE SSP, beginning the morning of Saturday, May 26 and concluding by 1pm on Monday, May 28.

Travel and Lodging

Airport

The University of Georgia is in Athens, approximately 75 miles northeast of Atlanta. To get to Athens, fly to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL).

Shuttle

You can then get a shuttle to Athens through Groome Transportation, which will take you directly to the Hilton Garden Inn or Georgia Center (a reservation specifying your destination is necessary in order to be dropped off at the Hilton). Check out Groome Transportation’s schedule here. Round-trip shuttle rides are currently $63, and reservations are strongly recommended.

Hotels

VIGRE-sponsored participants will be staying at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Athens May 20-25 for the first week of programming. They will then stay at the Georgia Center located on the UGA campus May 25-June 2 (unfortunately the Georgia Center was unavailable for the entire program).
