The Tenth South Eastern Approximation Theory Conference

The University of Georgia
Athens, Georgia
March 23 - 24, 2002

(last update: Dec. 8, 2001)

The conference is tentatively planned for two days. Each day, the meeting will feature four one hour lectures and parallel sessions of 20-minute talks. The following researchers have agreed to give invited lectures: Doron Lubinsky (Georgia Tech.), Marian Neamtu (Vanderbilt), Wenjie He (Missouri at St. Louis), Jian-Guo Liu (Maryland) on classic approximation theory, multivariate splines, wavelets and numerical solution of partial differential equations. There will be a banquet at 7 PM Saturday, March 23, 2002 for the conference participants to gather together. The conference registration fee is $20 which will offset the banquet cost. A small amount of funding will be available for supporting graduate students and new PHD's or post-doc's without any means of support to attend the conference. The funding is subject to the availability of the Army Research Office funds. Mainly, we hope to be able to reimburse the local expenses for their participation during the conference. Those who wish to get this support, please apply for it when registering. The conference will take place in the Boyd Graduate Studies & Research Building.

Accomodations

We have reserved 15 rooms at the Holiday Inn, 197 East Broad St., Athens.  The rate is $84 per night.   Participants should book the rooms themselves - the telephone number is 706-549-4433. Rooms need to be booked by March 1, 2002, because the hotel will not hold them after that. Use the code 'MTH' to get the quoted rate.

For the budget-minded, there is also the Holiday Inn Express, 513 West Broad St., Athens. This is a slightly reduced service hotel, at which rooms currently go for $74 per night. The above phone number can also be used to book rooms at this hotel. We have also reserved 15 rooms at this location.

Finally, the Georgia Center for Continuing Education is on campus. It is a 5 minute walk from the Boyd Graduate Studies& Research Building where the conference will take place.   The rate is $69/night for single occupancy and   $79/night for double occupancy. The phone number is (706)542-6364. You do not need to mention the conference since it is NOT listed there.

The two versions of  the Holiday Inn are essentially downtown, within a block of each other.  They are about a 20-25 minute walk from the Boyd Graduate Studies Research Building, where the talks will be held.

Travel

1) All major airlines have flights into Atlanta. The van service AAA Athens/Atlanta Airport Express (800-354-7874) can provide the 90 minute trip to Athens for $30 one way. You'll need to contact AAA to make a reservation. Please consult the AAA schedule.

2) The only airline that has flights into Athens is US Airways (800-428-4322), which flies to Athens from Charlotte. There are three flights a day from Charlotte to Athens, and there are many flights to Charlotte from the Northeast. The Athens airport is just a couple of miles from town, and there is taxi service from the airport. (Someone from the math department may be able to pick you up at the Athens airport during Friday, March 22, 2002. Please call 542--2211 for a ride.)

3) There are three major interstate highways connected to Atlanta, i.e., I-20, I-85, and I-75. When you drive to Atlanta, you need to be on North I-85 towards Greenville. After leaving Atlanta about 10 miles, you will see a connection to Athens which is a state highway 316. Keep driving on highway 316 which will lead you to Downtown Athens. The University of Georgia is located in the downtown of Athens. Check out the driving direction to Athens.
