MATH 3000 (Azoff)
Linear Algebra
Fall 2009

Last updated November 22.

I probably sent mixed messages as to whether the third hour test will be held on Friday December 4 or Monday December 7.  The advantage of having it on Friday is that  it would provide a little time for review at the end of the course;  the advantage of having it on Monday is that it would make it easier to get your graded Chapter 6 homework back to you before the test.  We can vote on this on Monday the 30th.

In any case, the exam will concentrate on material from Chapters 4, 5, and 6.  Practice problems in Bold font and a study guide at http://www.math.uga.edu/~azoff/courses/3000t3guide.html can be used to help prepare for the test.

The final exam is scheduled for 8 - 11 AM on Monday December 14;  it will be comprehensive.  An amalgamation of the study guides for tests 1, 2, and 3 can be found at http://www.math.uga.edu/~azoff/courses/3000guide.html

Office hours on Wednesdays and Fridays have been extended to 3:30.

    Note on Homework.  Most assignments in this class will use a web-based homework system called WebWork. (Most assignments will also involve pencil and paper work.)

    The WebWork link is https://webwork.math.uga.edu/webwork2/Math3000_Azoff_F09/.  When following this link for the first time, you may receive a message to the effect that your browser does not have a currently valid certificate for this website. See below for information on how to fix this.

    WebWork Accounts have been set up for all students currently registered for the class.  Your username is your UGA MyID and your initial password is set to your 810 student number formatted 810-xx-xxxx.  This means leaving off the last digit and repositioning the final dash as the number is exhibited on your card. Your UGA password is not involved.    Email me at azoff@math.uga.edu if you have trouble accessing your account.

    Until a WebWork assignment is due, you can try the problems as many times as you like, and the system will tell you whether you have the right answer.  This lets you correct your work immediately.  Shortly after an assignment is due, answers will be posted.  You are welcome to work together on WebWork problems, but each student's problems will be slightly different, so copying others' answers will not work.

    Installing or Updating the WebWork Security Certificate For Your Web Browser

    While browsing university web sites, you may encounter a situation when accessing a valid web site where you get a warning about the security certificate not being from a trusted certificate source.  Different browsers will present this information to you in different wording:

    * Firefox:  "Unable to verify the identity of sitename as a trusted site."
    * Internet Explorer:  "The security certificate was issued by a company you have not chosen to trust. View the certificate to determine whether you want to trust the certifying authority."
    * Safari:  "The certificate for this website was signed by an unknown certifying authority. You might be connecting to a website that is pretending to be sitename which could put your confidential information at risk."

    There are three ways to handle this situation. You can choose not to proceed, but won't access the site.

    You can choose to ignore this message (with or without verifying the certificate details) and click Continue to access the site, or create an exception. If you do decide to do this, make sure you do verify the certificate is a valid one before continuing, else you leave yourself open to malicious tampering from a rogue web site. It is poor security practice to simply click "Ok" or "Yes" without verifying the content of the security certificate.

    Updating Internet Explorer 7 on a Windows computer

    1. Delete the old security certificate (if any):
         * Launch Internet Explorer
         * Click Tools then Internet Options
         * On the Internet Options window, select the Content tab and click the Certificates button
         * On the Certificates window, click on Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab to see a list of issuing certificate authorities and the corresponding certificates

         * If found, click to select it, then click the Remove button
         * Click Yes
         * Click Yes
