The textbook is Algebraic Topology, by Allen Hatcher. We will cover chapters 0, 1, and 2.
Summary of topics: Quotient spaces and cell complexes. Classification of surfaces. Fundamental group and covering spaces. Homology.
Homework will be assigned every week. Grades will be based on homework (50%) and a final exam (50%). There will be no exams during the term. The final exam will be similar to the PhD qualifying exam in topology. In particular it will contain topics from MATH 4200. The final exam is Thursday, May 4, 8:00-11:00 am.
