MATH 4010/6010, Exam 1 Review

The exam Thursday 2/19 will cover chapter 6 and sections 7.1 and 7.2, EXCEPT for the following topics:

- Theorem 3.11, page 195.

- Solution of the 15 puzzle: Lemma 4.7 (page 204) through Theorem 4.10 (page 207).

- Example 1(e), page 213.

Suggestions for exam preparation:

Make a vocabulary list. You should know the definitions and examples of the concepts defined.

Make a theorem list. You should know the statements of the theorems and examples illustrating the theorems.

Make an example list. In particular you should have a good list of groups and group actions and their properties.

Review all the assigned homework. It's a good idea to look at all of the problems in the book, especially the low-numbered problems.

Questions on the exam will be of two basic types: short proofs and working out relatively simple examples. The proofs and examples may overlap what we've done in class and homework, or they may be new.
