Geometry Group

The geometry group includes algebraic geometry, differential geometry, mathematical physics, and representation theory. A diverse group of mathematicians in the department has a number of overlapping research interests in a broad range of geometric problems. We share research interests with faculty in number theory, topology, and algebra.

    Conferences

This spring's Southeastern Geometry Conference was in Athens, April 19-21. The 2001 conference was an extended special session, Geometry of Curves and Surfaces, at the AMS sectional meeting at the University of South Carolina. It was hosted by Mohammad Ghomi and Ralph Howard. In 2000 the conference was hosted by Annalisa Calini and Alex Kasman at the College of Charleston.

    VIGRE

In the fall of 2001 Jason Cantarella organized a VIGRE research group on ropelength of knots. Members of the group are the postdoc Nancy Wrinkle, the graduate students Xander Faber, Chad Mullikin, and Heunggi Park, and the freshman Darren Wolford.

In the winter of 2002 Valery Alexeev organized a VIGRE research group on moduli of curves. Members are the postdocs Jihun Park, Bill Rulla, and Csilla Tamas, and the graduate students Daniele Arcara, Tawanda Gwena, Peter Petrov, Kenyon Platt, Wade Schueneman, and Vitali Vologodski.

    Further Information

Dave Benson has compiled useful archive of preprints on representations and cohomology.

Our Graduate Bulletin with information for prospective graduate students is available online. If you are interested in graduate studies in geometry or topology, and you would like further information on our group, please contact any of us.
