Ty Connell
Position:
Software Engineer
Employer:
McCall Conuslting
Job description:
I work for a consulting firm who specializes
in helping clients
deliver Object Oriented software solutions. I am currently
staffed with an internet banking firm working on a online
investment product (similar to Datek's and Schwab's). This
is an application that will be sold to other banks, both large
and small.
Salary range:
45,000 + incentives
Job satisfaction:
Since I had no experience developing
software, I had to
start at the bottom. This led to an entry level role doing
some more mundane work than I would have preferred. Since
this role has extended beyond my employer's original
intentions, they have really worked with me to let me know
it is appreciated. I work for a smaller firm that is filled
with a group of highly skilled and intelligent professionals.
I feel fortunate to have been given the opportunity to work
with them. They go out of their way to make their
employees happy. They believe it is harder and more expensive
to find and recruit good people, so it is value added to try
to keep the ones they have. I would encourage any outstanding
candidates to apply with our firm.
Employment history:
U.S. Navy / Navy Reserve 1991-1999
UCNS / UGA 1996-1999
McCall Consulting Group Mar. 1999-Present
Suggestions for students:
Maturity and professionlism are
critical aspects of our entry
level candidates. Co-ops and/or internships help tremendously.
I would say they are analogous to having A.P. credit when you
come to college. Instead of having to fight with all the
other Freshmen for what classes are "left over," you get a type
of head of the line priveledge. Also, I do a ton of writing
and a fair amount of public speaking. These are two items that
I did not work on (purposely), so I believe every effort
should be made to encourage students to do these better.
The people who are respected and will move up faster are
the ones who are able to communicate their ideas more
effectively through both written and oral mediums.
Advisor/Student relationship:
It would be a good idea if
students had to give an oral
presentation at least once on some research they had performed.
