Paul Lupica
Position:
Associate Consultant
Employer:
Reden and Anders. Ltd
Job description:
Our firm is an actuarial and consulting firm specializing in health and managed care. I assist the consultants with various projects for our clients. These projects include pricing, reserving, and other types of data analyses.
Salary range:
$55,000-$65,000
Job satisfaction:
I have only been with this firm for a few months, but so far it has been great. The entire staff here is very easy to work with. Being an actuarial student, I find it very satisfying to have much company-allotted time to study for exams. Of course, there must be a good balance between work and studying.
Employment history:
After receiving my master's from UGA, I was a math instructor at the State University of West Georgia for 2 years. While I was there, I decided to enter the actuarial profession. I worked as an actuarial analyst for Atlanta Casualty, an automobile insurance company. I worked there for 3 1/2 years prior to coming on at Reden and Anders.
Suggestions for students:
Because I have been married since I graduated, I have always found employment that enables me to have a steady home life. My wife and I have two small children, and family life is really important to me. If it is for you, don't lose sight of it. Your family is your life; don't let your job become your life.
Advisor/Student relationship:
I would suggest a joint program between the mathematics, statistics, and risk management & insurance departments for some sort of actuarial program. I realize that Ga State has one of the largest programs in the country, but it might be helpful for current UGA students to get a flavor for actuarial science.
I will say that the mathematical training I received at UGA has proved to be quite invaluable, especially in my field.
Internships:
I don't really know if there would be any opportunity for interships here. I will find out.
