Carolyn Merritt
Position:
Technical Business Analyst
Employer:
Turner Broadcasting in Atlanta
Job description:
Responsible for gathering and analyzing business
requirements and ensuring the successful implementation of an
integrated client-server system for the Turner Entertainment
Group.
Salary range:
$60,000-$65,000
Job satisfaction:
I am very satisfied with my job. It is very
rewarding working with users and working with a system from design
through production support. Turner is an excellent company to work
for. The entertainment industry is very complex and interesting.
Employment history:
After graduation, I worked for 4+ years for
EDS (Electronic Data Systems) as a Business Analyst in the local
government arena, and completed the intensive EDS Systems Engineering
Development technical training program, where I received formal
training in Visual Basic, Sybase, and C. I recently joined the
Worldwide Information Technology Services group at Turner Broadcasting
as a Technical Business Analyst.
Suggestions for students:
It is important to network and establish
contacts with potential employers through professors, alumni, and
friends. Sometimes the best jobs are found by word of mouth rather
than in the classifieds. As an undergraduate I found the resources at
Clark-Howell hall to be very useful as well.
Advisor/Student relationship:
My advisor as an undergraduate was
excellent. He was very straightforward and honest, and tried to help
me make the best decisions for coursework based upon my interests. He
understood what my interests were and was able to advise me to take
classes to further develop my interests.
In my experience there are two "types" of math majors: those
who are primarily interested in applied math and those
who are interested in more abstract math. It would be
useful to have an advisor who shares your interest and who
can advise you on what options you have, what career paths
you can choose, and who can help you formulate a plan of
specific classes, etc.
Miscellaneous comments:
I think it is a good idea for
undergraduates to be encouraged to participate in seminars and
symposia to gain more exposure to mathematics and to meet people who
share their interests. It is also good to join the math club to begin
networking with fellow undergraduates and
grad students and to begin learning about what you can do
with a math major.
