Scott Walden
Position:
Software Engineer
Employer:
BellSouth (Science & Technology Dept)
Job description:
Develop the software that creates the
services such as Caller ID, Flexible Call Forwarding, ....
Salary range:
$50,000-$70,000
Job satisfaction:
I enjoy software development, but do miss
technical analysis. First job I had was mostly involved in analyzing
signals using Fourier transforms, FFT, and lots of probability theory.
I liked that job better but wanted to get out of the defense industry,
so I switched to telecomminications and software.
Employment history:
After getting my Master's in Applied Math,
I then went to Ga. Tech and got a Master's in Electrical Engineering.
So my first job was an engineering job at E-Systems (Defense related).
I then went into contracting at Texas Instruments in their
telecommunications dept. Then I got the job at BellSouth
Suggestions for students:
Interview on campus as much as
possible. I never did have any luck sending resumes through the mail.
However, I did get my last 2 jobs from the want ads in the paper.
Advisor/Student relationship:
I would advise the students to
take a programming course in C or C++. It seems that now no matter
what kind of technical job you get, it helps to have programming
experience. Also, know as much about the internet as you can. It
would also be helpful (and this could have changed since I was there)
to have more technical companies come to the University for
interviews.
Miscellaneous comments:
I am not sure how useful I would be
since a lot of my career has been based on my engineering degree. I
do know that my degrees in math helped my immensely in my engineering
pursuit, so if anyone wants any advice toward this I would be happy to
help them.
