Office Hours

Tuesdays, 11:45-1:00, in Aderhold 412

I have another room reserved in Aderhold at the same time if you would like to speak privately.

You are always welcome to make an appointment to come and talk to me, or you can catch me with a quick question either before or after class.


Homework Assignments

Due Monday, August 24: Do the practice problems for section 7.4 and hand in the following problems from p. 339-343: 3, 4, 6, 10, 13, 19.

Due Wednesday, August 26: Read section 7.5 and review section 7.4.

Due Monday, August 31: (updated 8/25) Read section 7.6 and review section 7.5.

Due Wednesday, September 2: Do the practice problems for section 7.5 and hand in problem 23 on page 342 and problems 1ab, 2, 4, 5, on p. 350. Remember to use complete sentences in your explanations.

Due Monday, September 7: Holiday (Labor Day)

Due Wednesday, September 9: Do the practice problems for section 7.6 and hand in problems 8 and 16 on p. 373-374. There will be a quiz on chapter 7, sections 7.4, 7.5, and 7.6.

Due Monday, September 14: Do but don't hand in Class Activity 7CC on p. 237 of the Activities Manual. Read Section 13.1 and try the practice problems.

Due Wednesday, September 16: Read section 13.2 and try the practice problems. Hand in problem 2 on p. 708 and problem 19 on p. 713. (Hint: If you are stuck on 19, you may want to do number 18 first.)

Due Monday, September 21: Read section 13.3 and try the practice problems.

Due Wednesday, September 23: Problems 22, 25, and 28 on p. 713.

Due Monday, September 28: Do but don't hand in Problems 2, 9, and 11 on p. 727. We will go over these in class as part of the review. You can turn these in for me to "check" if you want to. Review all of your old homework and come to class ready to review the material for Wednesday's Test.

Due Wednesday, September 30: TEST on sections 7.4, 7.5, 7.6, 13.1, and 13.2.

Due Monday, October 5: Read (or re-read) section 13.3 and try the practice problems.

Due Wednesday, October 7: Hand in problems 1 and 2 on p. 739-740.

Due Monday, October 12: Look over chapter 12 and try the practice problems in 12.1, 12.2, and 12.3. We will vote on a test date for test #2.

Due Wednesday, October 14: Hand in Problem 15 parts a,b,d on p. 742, the extra problem below, and problem 10 on p. 775. There will be a QUIZ on section 13.3. I may also include a question like the ones on the last test, so make sure that you understand how to correct what you missed on the test! Today is a DOUBLE HEADER for cluster F! The second meeting will be in Aderhold 216 at 9:30.

Due Monday, October 19: Turn in the take-home quiz and catch up on practice problems if you need to.

Due Wednesday, October 21: Hand in Problem 4 on p. 653 and Problems 7 and 11 on p. 660. Cluster F: You need to turn this in before you leave for Auburn. You may turn it in during office hours Tuesday or bring it by my office Tuesday afternoon. Please do not send electronic copies.

Due Monday, October 26: Catch up on practice problems.

Due Wednesday, October 28: Hand in Problem 5a on p. 667 and Problems 1 and 6 on p. 671-672. The previously scheduled quiz has been moved to next Wednesday, November 4.

Due Monday, November 2: Look over all of the material since the first test as you review for Wednesday's quiz.

Due Wednesday, November 4: Hand in Problem 3 on p. 676 (section 12.5) and Problem 3 on p. 786 (section 14.1). There will also be a quiz. The quiz will cover all of the material for which you have already received graded homework.

Due Monday, November 9: no class (in field)

Due Wednesday, November 11: no class (in field)

Due Monday, November 16: The field report is due; we will briefly go over percentiles.

Due Wednesday, November 18: TEST 2: Test 2 will cover everything that we have done in class up to (but not including) chapter 14.

Due Monday, November 30: Hand in optional homework (if you want it to sub for a low previous homework grade): Problem 1 and Problem 8 on p. 809 and Problem 4a on p. 821.

Due Wednesday, December 2: Quiz on chapter 14. The following are recommended practice problems for the quiz: Problem 4 on p. 801, Problems 1, 4, 7, 8, 12, and 13 on p. 809, and Problems 1 and 4a on p. 821.

Due Monday, December 7: This is our last day. Come prepared to discuss any questions you have about course material.

Final Exam: December 10


Field Assignment

The field assignment will be due November 16. You may complete it at any time, but please wait until November 16 to turn it in. Click here to view the .doc for the field assignment. You may type your answers into this document, or you can make your own document.

Test Dates

Test 1 is scheduled for Wednesday, September 30.

Test 2 is scheduled for Wednesday, November 18.


Extra Problem for Homework 7 (Due Oct. 14)

Paul took out a loan for $30,000 to buy a new sporty car. At the end of each month, 4% of what he owes is added to his debt. The day Paul took out his loan, he lost his job for facebooking at work, so he isn't making any payments. Assume that no action is taken against Paul (like repossession) for not making payments on the loan, and that nothing other than interest is being added to what he owes.
a. Make a table showing how much Paul owes at the end of 1, 2, 3, 4,...,12 months.
b. Write a formula for how much Paul will owe at the end of N months. Explain why your formula is valid.

Mrs. Belton goes to elementary school

I saw some of you while I was visiting Barrow Elementary on September 11, 2009. I went to see math time in two Barrow classrooms as part of the Mathematicians Educating Future Teachers (MEFT) program in UGA's math department, which is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
