A Measuring Stick for a Gasoline Tank

An underground cylindrical gasoline storage tank is 8 feet deep and 20 feet long. The tank is in a horizontal position as shown below.

[Maple OLE 2.0 Object]

Your task is to mark the first 8 feet of a 12 ft  stick that can be inserted through the top of the tank to measure the amount of gasoline in the tank. Assume that one cubic foot of gasoline equals 7.48 gallons of gasoline.

Warm-up Exercise

Determine the number of gallons of gasoline in the tank when the gasoline is 3 ft deep.

Project - Part 1

Assume the stick is marked off in three-inch intervals. Determine the number of gallons to put at each mark on the stick.

Project - Part 2

Suppose the markings on the stick are not evenly spaced, but are placed so that going from one marking to the next represents an increment of 200 gallons. Determine where the markings should be placed on the stick. Give the distance from each marking to the end of the stick that goes to the bottom of the tank.
