Textbook:
Mathematics
for Elementary Teachers, by Sybilla Beckmann,
Addison-Wesley, 2005
The Activities Manual
to Accompany the above book is also required and
needs to be
brought to class each time.
We
will
cover chapters 8, 9, 10, and 11.
Tools needed: ruler, compass, protractor, scissor
Topical outline: Visualization. Angles. Geometric shapes and their properties. Constructions with straightedge and compass. Transformation geometry: reflections, translations, rotations. Symmetry. Congruence. Similarity. Measurement, especially length, area, and volume. Converting measurements. Principles underlying calculations of areas and volumes. Why various area and volume formulas are valid. Area versus perimeter. The behavior of area and volume under scaling.
See also Sybilla Beckmann's syllabus for this class. (Note the change in textbook edition.)
Test 2 - Friday March 10
Test 3 - Friday April 14
Any unexcused absence on a test day will result in a test grade of 0. It will be possible to make up for a missed test only if documented justification for the absence is provided.
Homework:
Homework will be assigned
regularly below
and due each Friday that we do not have an exam.
Only some problems from each assignment will be required to
turn in. The collected homework will be graded for accuracy
and
mathematical writing. You are expect to write explanations
that are legible, clear (but not verbose),
convincing, and coherent enough so that your fellow classmates could
learn from them. Please do not submit the first draft.
Late homework will not be accepted. Your lowest
homework grade will be dropped.
Class Attendance and Participation: Both are necessary in this class. In order to protect class from distraction, coming-later-for and leaving-early-from classes are discouraged. Please let me know in advance if you must come late or leave early. You are responsible for all information and announcements given in class, even if your absence is excused.
Grading:
For
full credit, full work must be shown.
Tests: 60% (20% each)
Homework: 15%
Final: 25%
Course grading: A: 90%-100%; B: 80%-89%; C: 70%-79%; D: 60%-69%; F: less than 60%.
Academic Honesty: All students are responsible for maintaining the highest standards of honesty and integrity in every phase of their academic careers. The penalties for academic dishonesty are severe and ignorance is not an acceptable defense.
See http://www.uga.edu/ovpi/academic_honesty/culture_honesty.htm;
especially sections 5 and 7.
On all exams I ask that you write out and sign the
Student
Honor Code:
"I will be academically
honest in all of
my academic work
and will not tolerate academic dishonesty of others."
