Analysis on Metrized Graphs REU Participants
Students
Maxim Arap
Maxim Arap was born and raised in Republic of Moldova. In 2001 he graduated
from an English-Russian liceum and passed his SAT examination. Subsequently, he
was accepted to the University of Georgia and moved to the United States on
F-1 student visa. Maxim's one-year pursuit of different majors ended up with
Mathematics and Computer Science. He was very fortunate to be accpeted to
Analysis of Metrized Graphs REU, and is very thankful to its leaders
and participants.
Jake Boggan
John Carnes Boggan is a senior and a Foundation
Fellow at the University of Georgia. He has travelled
extensively throughout Europe and for a semester lived in Budapest to
consume graph theory at the source. His interests include eating
foreign foods, playing music, learning languages, staring intently at
chalk-covered surfaces and hunting watermelons. His dislikes
include collectivism and writing about himself in third person.
Rommel Cortez
Rommel Cortez is a mathematics major at UC Berkeley whose interests include music and
soccer. He tries to catch as many concerts as he can. He also likes to collect
books, mostly math at the moment but it is getting more varied.
Crystal Gordon
Crystal M. Gordon is a senior mathematics major at Savannah State
University, located in the beautiful, historic Savannah, Ga.
Upon graduation, she intends to pursue graduate work in a
mathematics-related field. In addition to her academic studies,
she is a Senior Airman in the GA Air National Guard, assigned to the
117th Air Control Squadron. Here, she trains as a Satellite,
Wideband, and Telemetry Systems (SWATS) Apprentice.
In her spare time, she enjoys reading, creative dance, and Broadway musicals.
Kevin Mills
Kevin Mills is an undergraduate mathematics major who attends the
University of the Virgin Islands. He was born on the island of
St. Kitts, and was raised on St.Thomas, one of the trio of United States
Virgin Islands. Also, he has developed a strong interest in number
theory through his undergraduate experience at UVI. Mills has gained
experience in mathematical research by participating in various
research experiences for undergraduates at different institutions.
One of his future goals is to become a research mathematician.
Kinsey Rowe
Kinsey Rowe hailed to UGA from Houston, TX. When not in the gym with the
Gym
Dogs, she majors in mathematics. She drives a Honda Civic named "Suzy the Civic".
Phil Zeyliger
Philip Zeyliger is soon to begin his fourth year as
an undergraduate at Harvard College, concentrating
in mathematics. When not at school, he lives in lovely,
temperate Los Altos, CA. He is an occasional photographer
for the Harvard Crimson
and is also involved with the Harvard Computer Society.
Assistants
Xander Faber
Xander W.C. Faber received his Bachelor of Science
from the Pennsylvania State University in 2001 and his
Master of Arts will be conferred in 2003 from the
University of Georgia. He will be pursuing a
PhD at Columbia University beginning in the fall of 2003.
His mathematical interests range
from analytic number theory to optimal geometric
knot theory to finite field geometry. Who knows
what he'll be working on next! When not doing math, his
interests include spending time with his new wife,
reading about physics, playing freestyle footbag, and
doing math.

Instructors
Matt Baker
Matt Baker received his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1999 from the University of
California, Berkeley under the supervision of Robert Coleman. From
1999 to 2002, he was a Benjamin Peirce Assistant Professor at Harvard University.
He is currently an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the
University of Georgia. His
hobbies include rollerblading, swimming, poetry, magic, guitar, and metrized graphs.
