Math 8200: Algebraic Topology, Spring 2010
This is a graduate level introduction to algebraic topology. The class meets 09:30-10:45 on Tuesday/Thursday in Boyd 326, starting on Thursday January 7. (Note the change to the originally scheduled time.) We will cover the following topics:
- the fundamental group of a topological space
- covering spaces
- singular homology
- CW complexes and cellular homology
- classification of surfaces
The textbook is: Algebraic Topology by Allen Hatcher. This book can be downloaded online here. We will cover most of chapters 0,1 and 2, more if time permits.
