Assignments of weeks 1 – 5

Week 6:

Due Tuesday, September 22: Do (but donÕt hand in) practice problems 7 – 10 of section 4.3 and check your answers.

Due Thursday, September 24: Read pages 195, 196 of chapter 5 as well as the revised introduction to chapter 5, ÒMultiplicationIntroÓ that is posted on e-learning commons on the math 5020 homepage. Do the practice exercises in the revised text. Hand in: Problems 5 and 11 on pages 160, 161 and problem 19 on page 162. 

Week 7:

Due Tuesday, September 29: Read section 5.2 and do the practice problem in that section. Hand in: Problem 4 on page 203 of the text; and problems 3 and 5a,b,c on pages 9, 10 of ÒMultiplicationIntroÓ on e-learning commons on the math 5020 homepage.

Due Thursday, October 1: Read sections 5.3 and 5.4 and do the practice problems in those sections. QUIZ on sections 3.4 (comparing fractions), 3.5 (percent), and 4.3 (adding and subtracting fractions).

Week 8:

Due Tuesday, October 6: Read section 5.5 and do the practice problems in that section. Hand in: Problem 3 on page 213 and discuss both strategies, including why both are valid and what property of arithmetic is involved; problem 8 on page 214 and problems 7, 10 on page 225.

Due Thursday, October 8: Read section 5.6 and do the practice problems in that section.

Week 9:

Due Tuesday, October 13: Hand in: Problem 14 on page 236; problem 2c on page 245 but find 3 ways; and problem 4 on page 246.

Due Thursday, October 15: No class meeting because most of the class will be attending the Georgia Math Conference. At the conference, attend at least one session on numbers and operations, ideally something that we have discussed in the course or will be discussing. See the assignment due October 20 for further information.

Week 10:

Due Tuesday, October 20: Hand in: (1) Describe what was presented in the numbers and operations session you attended at the conference giving specific details and examples. If you were not able to attend the conference or an appropriate session, then pick an important idea we have studied this semester and discuss it in several paragraphs, including examples and explanations that would be useful if you were teaching the idea. Be sure to focus on the reasoning and the ÒwhyÓ not just the Òhow.Ó (2) In 2 or 3 paragraphs, discuss connections you found between the material presented in the session you attended at the conference and material we have studied. Give details and examples and focus on ideas and lines of reasoning. If you did not find any suitable connections then pick an idea we have studied this semester and discuss it in several paragraphs, including examples and explanations that would be useful if you were teaching the idea. Be sure to focus on the reasoning and the Òwhy,Ó not just on the Òhow.Ó (If you discussed an idea from the course for part 1, then pick a different idea for this part.)

 

Due Thursday, October 22: QUIZ on sections 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5. Hand in: Problem 7 a, b, c, d and 10 a, b, c, d on page 258 and problem 6 on page 246.

 

Week 11:

Due Tuesday, October 27: Oops, I forgot to assign section 5.7 and the practice problems in that section. If you have not done so already, please read that section and do the practice problems. Read section 6.1 and do the practice problems in that section. Hand in: Problems 6, 9 on pages 270, 271.

 

Due Thursday, October 29: Read section 6.1 again and work on the practice problems some more. Also do but donÕt hand in: problem 4 a, b, c, d on page 270.

Week 12:

Due Tuesday, November 3: Read sections 6.2 and 6.3 and do the practice problems in those sections. Hand in: Problem 6 on page 278, problem 12 on page 271 and also draw a rectangular picture for Manda and discuss briefly how multiplying mixed numbers is similar to multiplying two 2-digit numbers (such as 37 x 24).

 

Due Thursday, November 5: TEST on chapter 5 (with the section 5.1 replacement on eLearning commons) and section 6.1.

Week 13:

Due Tuesday, November 10: Read section 7.1 and do the practice problems in that section.

Due Thursday, November 12: Read section 7.2 and do the practice problems in that section. Hand in: Problem 2 on page 299, but change 38 to 42; problem 3 on page 299, problem 21 on page 301, and problem 5 a, b on page 313.

Week 14:

Due Tuesday, November 17: Hand in: On pages 312, 313: problems 2 a, b, c; 3 a, b; and 4 a, b, and for 3b and 4b include discussions of how to interpret the Òbringing downÓ steps in terms of the bundles or the money.

Due Thursday, November 19: Read section 7.3 to page 317 and do practice problem 1 on page 323. Read section 7.4 to page 327 and do practice problems 1 and 3 on page 335. Also do but donÕt hand in: problems 3 and 9 on pages 339, 340.

Thanksgiving break, week of November 23

Week 15:

Due Tuesday, December 1: QUIZ on sections 6.2, 7.1, and 7.2. Read the rest of section 7.4 and do the rest of the practice problems in that section. Hand in: Problems 10, 13, and 19 on pages 340  - 342.

Due Thursday, December 3: Last day of class. Begin to review for the final exam. Bring questions to class and thoughts about what youÕd like to review in class.

Tuesday December 8 operates on a Friday schedule

Wednesday, December 9: reading day

Office hours: Tuesday, December 8, 10:30 am – noon; Thursday, December 10, 11:30 am – 1 pm.

Final exam: 3:30 – 6:30 pm, Friday, December 11. The exam will cover the material from the entire semester.
