Does College Math Prepare Students to Teach High School Math?
Abstract: Analysis of the relation between undergraduate mathematics
and the public's diverse goals for high school mathematics (e.g.,
preparation for college, readiness for work and citizenship,
quantitative literacy, and fluency with data and computers).
About the speaker: Lynn Arthur Steen is Professor of Mathematics and
Senior Advisor to the Academic Vice President at St. Olaf College in
Northfield, Minnesota. He is the editor or author of many books on
mathematics and education, including "Why Numbers Count" (1997), "On
the Shoulders of Giants" (1991), "Everybody Counts" (1989), and
"Calculus for a New Century" (1988). Steen is a member of the
Mathematics Advisory Committee of The College Board and has served
previously as Executive Director of the Mathematical Sciences
Education Board (MSEB), President of the Mathematical Association of
America (MAA), and Chair of the Council of Scientific Society
Presidents (CSSP). Steen received his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1965
from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
