Textbook University Calculus,
by Hass, Weir, and Thomas.
Contents This course serves as an introduction to differential and integral calculus. We will cover most of Chapters 2 - 5 of the textbook, with some additions, omissions, and reorganizations.
Grading Graded work will include a final exam, four in-class exams, and homework. Each of the four in-class exams will be announced at least one week before it is given. Homework will be submitted via WebWork. Occasionally supplemental homework problems from the textbook will also be assigned; these will not be collected or graded. The final grade will be calculated using the following weights: homework submitted by WebWork 15%; in-class exams 15% each; final exam 25%. Percentages of at least 90, 80, 70, 60 guarantee grades of at least A-, B-, C-, D respectively.
Missed work There will be no make-up tests or quizzes. If you miss one of the three in-class exams for a legitimate reason, your grade will be determined by the remaining in-class exams and the final exam. An exam missed for no reason will be counted as a score of 0 points.
Attendance It is your responsibility to know what happens in class. The best way to fulfill this obligation is to come to every class meeting unless you are too ill to attend. Much of the time in class will be spent elaborating on text material, reviewing previous material and explaining concepts in several different ways. It is important that you are present and attentive at every class meeting.
Calculators and Computers Use of calculators and/or computers is permitted when doing homework problems. They will NOT be allowed on exams.
