Undergraduate News and Awards

This spring, we celebrated Pi Day (3/14) with a gathering of students.  We had 35 attendees, and we talked about upcoming classes.  Most importantly, we ate pizza. In April, Chris Shanku followed up his visit to the PIC Math class with an introductory training on Microsoft’s Power BI software for over 20 UGA undergraduates.  Chris is a former UGA Math Major and was excited to share his Microsoft experience with current UGA students.

The 2022 Cantrell Lecture Speaker will be Professor Akshay Venkatesh. 

A new course at the University of Georgia is helping math students explore the wide variety of careers open to graduates in their field. Jennifer Royal, senior lecturer in UGA’s math department, teaches students how to think critically and address these real-world problems through her inaugural Preparation for Industrial Careers (PIC) in Mathematical Sciences course.

We are excited to share with you that a new scholarship has been established by the Department of Mathematics in honor of Mrs. Kerry Rushin Miller. After graduating from UGA, Mrs. Miller pursued a career in telecommunications. In 1967, she was the second African American woman hired as an engineering associate at the Western Electric regional engineering headquarters in Atlanta, GA. She was selected in 1975 to join the BellSouth management team in Charlotte, NC. Among her many contributions at BellSouth, Mrs.

Kerry Rushin Miller graduated with a BS in Mathematics in 1966. She was one of the first three Black students to be accepted as freshmen in 1962.
