Math Advising

FOR STUDENTS WITH MORE THAN 60 HOURS

Academic advising is required of each student every semester. Each semester math students must meet with their academic advisor and their math faculty mentor in order to be cleared for registration.

Advising and Mentoring Structure

  • If you are considering a major in mathematics, please feel free to contact the Mathematics Undergraduate Coordinator, Jennifer Royal, jroyal@uga.edu to address any questions or concerns.
  • Students with math as their sole major should choose an area of emphasis; the general pathway is intended primarily for double majors. See the Major Programs page for a description of the areas of emphasis.
  • In Mathematics, academic advising is a two-step process: first, students meet with the Franklin Advisor to Mathematics, and then they meet with their mathematics faculty mentor. The Franklin Advisor ensures that all graduation requirements are being met, and the mathematics faculty mentor makes recommendations regarding the timing of required courses as well as selecting mathematics electives. The faculty mentor will notify the Franklin Advisor once they have met with their mentee(s).

The Advising Process for Math Majors

  • You must declare the major in Athena in order to see available appointments with the Franklin Advisor to Mathematics.
  • You will see appointments in SAGE within 48 hours of declaring the major. Here is a link to SAGE Frequently Asked Questions.
  • You will be contacted regarding your mathematics faculty mentor after you have declared your mathematics major.
  • You will meet with the Franklin Advisor to Mathematics, Kelsey Offen, prior to meeting with your faculty mentor. During this meeting, Kelsey Offen will create an academic plan for you that meets graduation requirements.
  • You will then schedule an appointment and review the proposed math courses with your faculty mentor.
  • The faculty mentor will email Kelsey Offen after your meeting; she will then clear your registration hold for the upcoming semester.
