The Creative Teaching Award committee has selected David Gay and graphic design professor Moon Jung Jang as co-winners for a 2020 Creative Teaching Award! 

Professors Gay and Jang have brought together mathematics and art to enrich the learning experience of students.  Most recently, a class they taught in collaboration led to a model featured on the cover of the prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, in October 2018. A link to this work is here:

Live Radio Feb 28 2020- Many college students struggle with math classes, but the University of Georgia math department is working to cut down the number of students who drop or fail math classes. An interview with Math Instructors Kelly Black and Toyin Alli about active learning in Math 1113.

Abstract:  This talk is aimed at a general mathematical audience.  We begin by reviewing some mathematical history around some important ideas of von Neumann, and how they fit into the stream of mathematics.  We then review some general techniques for dealing with spaces and algebras of Hilbert space operators, that is, with the ‘quantum analogue’ of functions and function spaces and algebras.
